HES 142: HUMAN ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY

BACKGROUND

This is a scientific study of the structure and function of the human body systems. The body systems and nutrition relate much because processing and utilization of nutrients is done within the systems.  Nutrition is widely related to as how food follows certain biochemical sequences and transformations. Thus, the course will serve as a pre requisite course for students studying Home Economics to enable them understand how food is processed, responded to, and utilized throughout the body at a physiological level. Upon completion of this course, students should be able to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of principles of anatomy and physiology and their interrelationships.

RATIONALE

The course will enable students have an understanding of the relationship between various body systems and nutrition. Students will be able to explain the body systems and relate them to nutrition as a driver of their proper functioning.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, students will be expected to:

(a)         explain anatomical terms

(b)       distinguish between anatomy and physiology

(c)        explain the concept of homeostasis and how it interrelates with human body functions

(d)       describe the major anatomical locations and general structures.

(e)        explain the anatomical structures and their physiological functions at both the organ and cellular levels.

(f)         apply the concepts learned in the course and relate them to nutrition.
